Iloilo flood control project catching up with fine weather

Iloilo City (14 May) — The Iloilo Flood Control Project is trying to take advantage of the relatively favorable weather, by speeding up construction activities.

Project Cluster I Director Patrick Gatan and Project Manager Jerome Borjal said they have been conducting regular site visitations to oversee the actual progress of the construction.

Gatan said that implementation of the project was divided into four packages to facilitate its prompt completion.

Package 1 is more than 40 percent completed, under contract in the amount of P1.3o5 billion with Hanjin Heavy Industries and construction company, consisting of the construction of Jaro Floodway of 4.75 kilometers, improvement of Tigum River, Aganan river and construction of six bridges.

According to a DPWH press release, activities at present include excavation works along upstream portion of Tacas Road and dopwnstream portion of highway at Buhang, while detour roads at bgys. Buhang and Bito-on are now completed and are being used for vehicular traffic.

In the same release, DPWH said channel excavations at Tigum river covering about 2.90 kilometers and Aganan river covering 3.88 kilometers are in full blast, simultaneously with those in Bgys. Pagsanga-an, Anilao in Pavia and Tacas, Balabago, Bito-on and Buhang bridges.

Under Package 2, contracted for a cost of P556.924 million with China International Water and Electrical Corporation, is the improvement of Iloilo River, Upper Ingore creek and both banks of Jaro river mouth.

The new Carpenter’s Bridge, which is part of the Iloilo River improvement is substantially completed while re-shaping of dike embankment side slope is among the on-going activity for the improvement of Jaro River mouth.

Package 3, costing P29.561 million, covers the development of relocation sites at Sooc and Ksadyahan for stage 1 project completed as early as April 2004.

For Package 4, bidding is underway for the development of relocation site at San Isidro for stage 2 project.

The Iloilo Flood Control Project is a priority project of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, financially assisted by the Japan’s Official Development Assistance for ODA through Japan Bank for international Cooperation.

Providing consulting assistance during the detailed design for infrastructure development including cost estimates and construction supervision as well as future operation and management stage, is the CTI Engineering International Co. Ltd. (PIA)
